SBBC Ministry of MBC

The history and development of Sydney Bible Baptist College under Metropolitan Baptist Church

College History

SBBC Ministry of MBC

Pastor Matthews and a group of fellow pastors had been working to this end, laboring together in the Independent Baptist Bible College. This ministry was formally taken under Pastor Matthews' leadership and made a ministry of Metropolitan Baptist Church in 1974, with the name later being changed to Sydney Bible Baptist College.

Pastor Matthews retained his position as the Principal of SBBC from 1974 until 1994, balancing a heavy teaching role (including the oversight of Prophecy, Spiritual Growth and Pastoral Theology courses), with the administration of the college and the pastorate of Metropolitan.

The college ministry had humble beginnings, with early classes being held in a room above a clothing store and at various locations until the Lord provided a more permanent home at 100 Evans Road, Dundas.

Significant growth in the college body also pressed the Matthews and the church to prayerfully seek a new home for Sydney Bible Baptist College. An unused boy's home in Oatlands was found and purchased; and SBBC was relocated to the property at 214 Pennant Hills Road, Oatlands. College classes started on the new campus in February 1988 and continue there to this day.

But from small things great things grow, and the college has a history which is a rich tapestry of lecturers from like-minded churches across our city, students from across the nation and graduates who have gone on to do mighty exploits for their God throughout Australia and the world.

Sydney Bible Baptist College is an Independent Baptist bible college, continues to operate under the authority of Metropolitan Baptist Church and is committed to the 'old paths' of the eternal Word of God.
